  • 1 short form question (1 x 4 marks)
  • 2 longer form questions (1 x 8, 1 x 12 marks)
  • 1 extended question (1 x 16 marks)

Writing (40 marks) (25%)

  • 1 extended writing question (24 marks for content, 16 marks for technical accuracy)

What Will My Assessment Test My Knowledge On?

English Language assesses you on the following Assessment Objectives:

AO1: identify and interpret explicit and implicit information and ideas select and synthesise evidence from different texts

AO2: Explain, comment on and analyse how writers use language and structure to achieve effects and influence readers, using relevant subject terminology to support their views

AO3: Compare writers’ ideas and perspectives, as well as how these are conveyed, across two or more texts

AO4: Evaluate texts critically and support this with appropriate textual references

AO5: Communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively, selecting and adapting tone, style and register for different forms, purposes and audiences. Organise information and ideas, using structural and grammatical features to support coherence and cohesion of texts

AO6: Candidates must use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation. (This requirement must constitute 20% of the marks for each specification as a whole.)

The aim of this paper is to develop students’ insights into how writers have particular viewpoints and perspectives on issues or themes that are important to the way we think and live our lives. It will encourage students to demonstrate their skills by:

  • in section A, reading two linked sources from different time periods and genres in order to consider how each presents a perspective or viewpoint to influence the reader
  • in section B, producing a written text to a specified audience, purpose and form in which they give their own perspective on the theme that has been introduced to them in section A.

What Should I Do To Revise And Prepare For This Assessment?

To prepare for this assessment:

  1. Talk to the BTA English team! We are happy to help and we will support you with your revision.
  2. Complete your SENECA homework to support with knowledge retention and understanding of your English Language and non-fiction texts.
  3. Attend Tuesday lunch time revision in 1.03 or Tuesday after school in 1.07.
  4. All Year 10 have been given a hard copy and electronic copy (on Go4Schools) of a revision booklet to support with English Language Paper 2.
  5. All Year 10 have access to the ‘Student Access Only’ One Drive which has the following at their disposal to revise from:
  • Knowledge Organisers for formative and low-stakes assessment.
  • The BTA English Dictionary: A compendium of ambitious and carefully chosen vocabulary to enhanced and improve your quality of thinking and writing.
  • Past papers for all English Literature and Language exams.
  • Previous lessons taught in class in booklet and PowerPoint form.
