Mock Exam Details
Paper 2 – Modern Texts and Poetry (An Inspector Calls & Poetry Anthology)
Date: Week Commencing Monday 9 June (in two of your normal lessons)
Length: 45 minutes each
Total Marks: 74 Marks
What’s assessed?
Section A: Reading
- Section A Modern texts: students will answer one essay question from a choice of two on their studied modern prose or drama text.
- Section B Poetry: students will answer one comparative question on one named poem printed on the paper and one other poem from their chosen anthology cluster.

What’s assessed?
Section A Shakespeare: students will answer one question on their play of choice. They will be required to write in detail about an extract from the play and then to write about the play as a whole.
What Will My Assessment Test My Knowledge On?
English Literature assesses you on the following Assessment Objectives:
AO1: Read, understand and respond to texts. Students should be able to: maintain a critical style and develop an informed personal response use textual references, including quotations, to support and illustrate interpretations.
AO2: Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate.
AO3: Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written.
AO4: Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation
PAPER 1:
This paper will assess you on your knowledge and understanding of Macbeth by William Shakespeare. You will be given an extract from a scene in Macbeth and are required to write an essay based on the extract and the rest of the play.
This exam will be completed in the exam hall during the Mock Exam window.
This exam, with Section A (Macbeth) and Section B (A Christmas Carol) is 1 hour 45 minutes.
You will only be completing Section A of this exam.
PAPER 2:
This paper will assess you on your knowledge and understanding of An Inspector Calls by JB Priestley and Poetry: The Power and Conflict cluster.
For An Inspector Calls, you will be given a choice between two questions to answer. You need to choose one question to write an essay on.
For the Power and Conflict poetry, you will be given one poem from the cluster to read and are required to write a comparative essay using the chosen poem and one other poem from the Power and Conflict cluster.
This exam will be completed in your English classrooms before the Mock Exam window.
This exam, with Section A (An Inspector Calls), B (Poetry: Power and Conflict) and C (Unseen poetry) is in total 2 hours and 15 minutes.
You will only be completing Sections A and B of this exam.
What Should I Do To Revise And Prepare For This Assessment?
- To prepare for this assessment:
- Talk to the BTA English team! We are happy to help and we will support you with your revision.
- Complete your SENECA homework to support with knowledge retention and understanding of your English Literature texts.
- Attend Tuesday lunch time revision in 1.03 or Tuesday after school in 1.07.
- All Year 10 have been given a hard copy and electronic copy (on Go4Schools) of a revision booklet to support with Macbeth, An Inspector Calls Poetry and English Language Paper 2.
- All Year 10 have access to the ‘Student Access Only’ One Drive which has the following at their disposal to revise from:
- Knowledge Organisers for formative and low-stakes assessment.
- The BTA English Dictionary: A compendium of ambitious and carefully chosen vocabulary to enhanced and improve your quality of thinking and writing.
- Past papers for all English Literature and Language exams.
- Previous lessons taught in class in booklet and PowerPoint form.
