Mock Exam Details

Final Piece Practical Exam

Date: Thursday 10 July (All Day) and Friday 11 July (All Day)

Length: 10 hours

Total Marks: 120 marks

What Will My Assessment Test My Knowledge On?

During your mock art exam, you will:

  1. Create your final piece
    • This is your opportunity to bring together all your preparation work into one final artwork.
    • Your final piece should clearly link to your sketchbook work and artist research.
  2. Use your best ideas
    • Choose one of your thumbnail sketches or compositions that you think works the best.
    • You should show how your ideas have developed through your prep work.
  3. Work independently
    • You will work on your own, using your own plans, ideas, and resources.
    • You can refer to your sketchbook for support but no new prep work should be made during the exam.
  4. Show off your skills
    • Use the techniques, materials, and media you have practised in your media trials.
    • Aim to create a personal and thoughtful response to your theme.
  5. Manage your time wisely
    • You will have 5 or 10 hours (depending on the schedule) to complete your final piece.
    • Plan your time carefully to make sure your work is finished and high quality.

How will my mock exam be marked?
Your coursework will be marked against these assessment criteria.

Assessment Objective What It Means (Formal) What This Means for You (Pupil-Friendly)
AO1 Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources. Show how you researched and got ideas from artists or designers. Think about how their work influenced yours.
AO2 Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting, and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques, and processes. Try different materials and techniques. Choose the best ones and improve your work as you go. Show your journey.
AO3 Record ideas, observations, and insights relevant to intentions. Keep good quality drawings, notes, photos, and sketches. Explain your thoughts and why you made certain choices.
AO4 Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language. Make a final piece that clearly shows your best ideas. Your work should be original, personal, and clearly connected to your earlier research.

How to Achieve Higher Marks

Make strong artist links

·         Show clear influence from the artists or designers you have studied.

·         Explain what you learned from them and how it helped your own work.

Show development and improvement

·         Don’t just stick with your first idea.

·         Show how you explored different ideas and improved them through experiments and trials.

Experiment with materials confidently

·         Try different techniques and materials in your prep work.

·         Choose the ones that work best for your final piece and show skill in using them.

Record thoughtfully

·         Keep high-quality sketches, photos, and notes throughout your project.

·         Add personal thoughts and explain why you made certain decisions.

Create a personal and meaningful final piece

·         Your final artwork should clearly link back to your theme, artist studies, and sketchbook journey.

·         Show your own style, ideas, and emotions — avoid simply copying others.

Finish to a high standard

·         Make sure your final piece looks complete, carefully made, and considered.

·         Pay attention to the details like backgrounds, edges, neatness, and overall presentation.

Annotate clearly and purposefully

·         Your sketchbook writing should explain your thinking and reflect on your progress, not just describe what you did.

What Should I Do To Revise And Prepare For This Assessment?

During your lessons you will:

  • Complete a series of thumbnail sketches exploring different ideas
  • Test and refine compositional techniques (e.g., rule of thirds, leading lines, symmetry/asymmetry)
  • Conduct media trials to select the best materials (e.g., acrylics, watercolours, mixed media)
  • Review and refine coursework sketchbooks
  • Ensure clear annotation linking decisions to intentions (linked to AO1 and AO2)

You need to ensure this and any outstanding coursework are completed before you come to your exam.
