A New Free School Opening in September 2021
Bluecoat Trent Academy

Archway Learning Trust has been approved as a sponsor by the Secretary of State for Education to open an 11 – 16 Free School to open in September 2021.

The consultation for the proposed  free school ran for 6 weeks between Monday, 28th September 2020 to Monday, 9th November 2020.

What is a 11 – 16 Free school?

11 – 16 simply represents the age range of the students, in other words Secondary School. A free school in England is a type of Academy, a non-profit-making, independent, State-funded school which is free to attend but which is not controlled by a local authority.

Why a new school?

Nottingham City has seen a significant increase in demand for primary places in recent years and this increase is now starting to move into secondary schools, with the greatest demand of secondary school places being in North, West and Central Nottingham, where already the schools serving this area are over-subscribed. Archway Learning Trust is passionately committed to raising aspirations and improving life chances of the young people of Nottingham, with this desire, local knowledge and the demand on school places, Archway Learning Trust can build on the experience and strengths of the Trust and its family to expand the provision of outstanding secondary education in Nottingham City.

Where will the New School be?

The location is not yet finalised but the Bluecoat Trent Academy will serve the geographical areas of North, Central and West of Nottingham City where the demand is currently greatest.

When will the New School Open?

The new 11 – 16 school will be opening in September 2021 for its first intake of Year 7 students.

Bluecoat Trent Academy will serve the geographical area of North / North West Nottingham and the draft admission arrangements will support this with the majority of places being based on distance.

The admission arrangements have been approved by the Department for Education (DfE) and form part of this consultation. They can be found here.

Families do not need to wait for the consultation to end before applying for a place for entry to Year 7 in September 2021.

Families wishing to apply for a place at Bluecoat Trent Academy do not need to name Bluecoat Trent Academy as one of their preferences on their common application form.  This is because the first intake to Bluecoat Trent Academy does not form part of the coordinated scheme, allowing parents to receive an offer of a secondary school place through the Local Authority coordinated admissions scheme and Bluecoat Trent Academy should a place be available, this allows families time to learn more about Bluecoat Trent Academy, its location and make an informed decision when accepting their secondary school place.

Live Consultation Event

Archway Learning Trust will be hosting a live consultation event on Wednesday, 14th October 2020 at 6pm via Microsoft TEAMS, providing an opportunity to find out more and ask questions about Archway and the proposal to enter into a funding agreement with the Secretary of State for Education to open a brand new free school in September 2021.
