Personal Development is delivered by all staff through a well-structured tutor programme and across subject disciplines. Our educators are supported with ongoing professional development to ensure they can deliver this curriculum with confidence and care, fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all learners. Students have 30 minutes once a week dedicated to these topics, taught to them by their usual form tutor.
An overview of the topics covered here at Bluecoat Trent can be found below.
- RSHE Session – Students will engage with key themes from the statutory Relationships, Sex, and Health Education curriculum, as well as broader topics that support their personal development and wellbeing.
- Reading for Pleasure – A dedicated time to build students’ fluency, confidence, and comprehension through structured reading activities and the use of school-wide reading strategies.
- Careers Session – A structured programme for students in Years 7–11 that provides insight into the world of work, including careers education, labour market information, financial literacy, and enterprise skills.
- CARE Curriculum – Focused on cultural awareness, shared values, and exploration of social, moral, spiritual, and cultural (SMSC) issues, this session connects students with national events, global themes, and community understanding.

“Pupils benefit from the school’s excellent personal development programme. It is carefully mapped out for all year groups. Pupils learn how to keep themselves and others safe, and to stay healthy, including online. They also learn about equality and explore a range of issues and opinions in tutor and assembly times.”
